COTHILDE R. SMITH

CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

History

The Foundation is named in honor and memory of  Clothilde R. Smith (1918-1996), mother of the Foundation’s incorporator, Melvin E. Smith, a former U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration official.  Mrs. Smith was born in 1918

in Biloxi, Mississippi.  She moved to Detroit, Michigan with her husband Eugene in 1941, where they proceeded to raise five children.  Although Mrs. Smith never had the opportunity to complete her formal education as a child, she was well aware of the impact a good education has on one’s life, and she taught her children to treasure every opportunity to learn.  Mrs. Smith’s employment varied as her children were growing up in order to provide them

with the time and money necessary for them to receive the education she never had.  As a testament to her

commitment to education, once her children were grown, Mrs. Smith enrolled in night school and finally received

the high school diploma she had always desired.

Mrs. Smith served as original founder of an African American Catholic Church and school in Detroit known as Our Lady of Victory Parish.   Mrs. Smith was very involved in the Catholic Church and was a great supporter of

education.  Her ties with the church included her long employment with the University of Detroit where she was employed for thirty years.

Mrs. Smith is no longer with us, however, her vision and legacy will continue on for generations to come.

The C. R. Smith Foundation (the Foundation) was created to raise funds for students, families and staff of

Old Redford Academy Preparatory Schools.  Since its inception, the Foundation has been managed by the family of Mrs. Smith.   The Board’s current members include:

  • Phillip E. Duplessis

  • Karon Smith

  • Jean L. Duplessis

  • Monica A. Duplessis

  •  Scott Smith

  • Marshall Smith

The Foundation is designed to work in tandem with Innovative Teaching Solutions (ITS), the management company that operates Old Redford Academy.  In 2006, the Foundation, in conjunction with Old Redford Academy,

completed the construction of an $11 million dollar elementary school.  The Foundation has also purchased four full size buses, numerous vans and trucks for Old Redford Academy Schools.  In addition, the Foundation provides support to Old Redford Academy families by providing free uniforms, clothing and financial assistance for students

in need.

The mission of the C.R. Smith Foundation and Old Redford Academy is to provide a learning environment that will develop children in reaching their maximum potential and to become productive members of a peaceful global society.  “NO CONCESSIONS OR CONTRIBUTIONS TO MEDIOCRITY” is the driving force for all staff and

students of Old Redford Academy as well as everyone involved in ITS and the Foundation.

Working together to put

“Families First”

While the Foundation was designed to operate in tandem with ITS, it is sometimes necessary to solicit donations to continue to assist those in need.   With this in mind your support would be greatly appreciated in the continuation of these charitable undertakings.
