"Putting Children First"

Philosophy

The Old Redford Academy’s (ORA) mission is to educate students in a clean and safe environment, incorporating a Liberal Arts program. The curriculum will represent an interdisciplinary concept to include the four core content areas of language arts, math, science and social studies. The fine arts, foreign language, computer technology, music and health/physical education will be included to enhance the educational program. The educational program is grouped in four divisions -- K-2nd grades (primary), 3rd – 5th grades (elementary), 6th – 8th grades (middle) and 9th-12th grades (High School) ; 1:25 teacher to student ratio. ORA will provide an individualized special education program of varying exceptionalities for those students whose needs require more than what the traditional classroom setting offers. It is the goal/desire of the special education program to provide students with a personalized one on one environment to invite learning and eventually mainstream the students back into the traditional classroom setting.

The ORA  philosophy of education is to educate the "whole child". The instructional program will meet the needs of the "whole child’s" – intellectual, physical, social, emotional and psychological aspects of life.

Parents are expected to be committed to the ORA philosophy and goals by becoming involved in such activities as class participation, at home activities, and student monitoring. It is important to ORA that parents have a voice in their child’s education as well as means to "actively" participate in this education. ORA will provide this means to enhance the education of each child. Development of the "whole child" requires education to be an extension of family and community. It is the responsibility of ORA to assist parents in their role as primary educators. ORA will promote a supportive partnership where both school and the family mutually respect each other as valued players in a quality education.

The construction and implementation of the curriculum, governance of the school, and overall management of ORA will embrace the individual student’s power and responsibility. Wherever possible, students will be encouraged to participate in skill building activities and to take an active role in achieving their success. Cooperative as opposed to competitive operating frameworks will be a high priority in the design and implementation phases. Skills for the development of a strong and positive self-image, pedagogical techniques for reinforcing that image, empowerment both in spirit an in life’s domain will underlie curriculum and social environmental planning.

The students, the teachers and parents will negotiate individual pupil profiles, developed for each child. Students will be placed in structural classrooms to receive in depth instruction. Students will remain in selected classes for as long as they need until they have mastered the content and can successfully progress to their next level.

In addition to traditional classroom teaching ORA will provide an Enrichment Program. The Enrichment Program is designed to "enrich" the "whole child" and provide positive alternatives to negative peer pressure. The student will be offered the opportunity to take private piano lessons, individualized tutoring and other enhancement classes. The enrichment program will be limited to students that are enrolled at ORA. ORA will provide a nutritional hot lunch program that will be prepared on-site daily. Extra-curriculum activities will include:

Intramural Basketball
Math & English Clinics
Boys and Girls Basketball Team

Girl Scouts
Boy Scouts

Student Council
Sister to Sister Mentoring
Vocal Glee Club
Cheerleading
Chess Club
Boys and Girls Etiquette Classes; and other activities targeted to reduce negative influences.
